St. John's plans community health fair, school party

St. John's Missionary Baptist Church, 1514 SW N.H. Jones Ave., will have its Community Health Fair and Back to School Party from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 1.

The registration will start at 8:30 a.m.

The free health fair will feature vision and dental screenings, sports physicals and screenings for diabetes and high blood pressure. Sylvia Williams, ministry leader for the inreach/outreach program, said the church has been organizing a back-to-school prayer event for several years and this is the first year it has added a health fair to the program.

"As a part of our inreach/outreach program at the church we want to reach out to the community," Williams said. "This is not an event only for those who are a part of this church, but this is an event for our Lawton community."

Williams said the fair is for people of all ages and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority will give a presentation for seniors.

"They will be giving information on Medicaid services that are available in the state," Williams said.

For the children there will be dental checkups that will include distribution of toothpaste, floss and other dental supplies.

"There are some children in the community who have never been to a dentist or had an eye exam," Williams said. "This is a way for us to reach to those children so that they can have access to those health services."

Pastor J. Weldon Gilbert said the church wants to expand its ministry not just in house but in the wider community.

"This health fair is not only for the kids going back to school, but it is also aimed to raise awareness about health among the parents," Gilbert said. "We will also be donating school supplies like pens, notebooks and glue to the children."

"We ask for the support from the community to donate school supplies for the children through our inreach/outreach ministry," Gilbert said. "We are a community-based organization and we are always trying to reach out to the community."

Williams said the Lawton Public Schools superintendent will also be present to share information about changes coming in the new school year. The parents will also learn about the immunizations needed for the children before they go back to school.
