St. John's Missionary gearing up for annual back-to-school bash

St. John's Missionary Baptist Church is gearing up for its fourth annual Back to School Bash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 5 at the church, 1504 N.H. Jones Ave.

The afternoon will consist of free school supplies for grads K-12th, backpacks, hygiene/personal care items, nutritious refreshments, health screenings, dental hygiene check-ups, hair cuts, along with other health and wellness resources and workshops. Students must be present to receive items.

Hot dogs, popcorn and juice will be available for free. The bash also will include door prizes and superhero T-shirts ranging from Batman to Wonder Woman available for $1 with all proceeds going toward the ministry.

The bash is hosted by the church's In Reach, Out Reach Committee, and was started by Sylvia Williams.

"We're excited because this is something we look forward to every year," Williams said. "And I know there are other organizations around the city that will be giving away the free backpacks and everything, but we have a lot of kids to give to. We have a very large community. So if you miss one, you'll get the other one. And some of them will hit all of them, but that's OK, too. We just want to make sure every kid has what they need to go back to school."
