Hazel Lee Nelson Fitch

Hazel Lee Nelson Fitch died peacefully on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at the age of 102, surrounded by her family. The youngest of five children born to the late Lars Sorensen Nelson and Sara Marie (Lee) Nelson, Hazel Lee was born on March 26, 1916, in Ottawa, Kansas. She grew up in Ottawa, graduating from Ottawa High School in May, 1934. She and Clyde Carl Fitch were married in Ottawa on October 20, 1936, and they were married for over 45 years until his death on May 10, 1982.

Following their marriage, they lived in Fort Scott, Kansas, until moving to Oklahoma City in 1937. It was while they lived in Oklahoma City that both their children, Carlana Kay and Frederick Lee, were born. The family moved from Oklahoma City to Lawton in November, 1950, where they established their family business, Fitch Industrial and Welding Supply.

Hazel Lee was an active member of her community serving in PTA throughout the years her children were students at Whittier and B.C. Swinney elementary schools. She was a charter member of the Lawton Book and Play Review Club where she served on the board of directors and as president from 1964 through 1966. She became a member of the Entre Nous Study Club in Lawton in 1957. She served three terms as president of the organization from 1963-64, 1969-70 and 1980-81. At the time of her death she was a lifetime honorary member of the organization. She was also a charter member of Cameron University’s President’s Partners and served on the board of directors until 2014. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lawton from 1950 until the time of her passing. She was active in the church’s Woman’s Missionary Union and taught in the Junior and Intermediate departments as well as helping with Vacation Bible School for many years.

In addition to her parents and her husband Carl, Hazel Lee was preceded in death by her brothers Raymond Leroy Nelson in 1966; and Clifford Morton Nelson in 1979; as well as her sisters Gladys Viola Crow in 1957 and Olive Mae Rice in 1990. She was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Leah Malouf Fitch, on September 21, 2006.

She is survived by her daughter Carlana and her husband Michael S. Murray of Wichita Falls, TX, and her son Fred and his wife Natalie of Lawton; one granddaughter, Dr. Lynna Lee Cherry of Charleston, SC; three grandsons, Steven Nelson Williams and his wife Libby of Plano, TX, Michael Frederick Fitch and his wife Mary of Oklahoma City and Alex Taylor Fitch of Beirut, Lebanon. Additionally, she is survived by two great-granddaughters, Lindsay Kay Williams of Plano, and Carter Leah Fitch and one great-grandson, Jack Michael Fitch both of Oklahoma City.

The family wishes to offer a special thank you to the McMahon Tomlinson Nursing Center staff and nurses of the Yellow Ward for the kindness and comfort given to Hazel Lee during her residency there. Services for Hazel Lee will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 3, in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church with the Reverend Tom Willoughby officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Highland Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.
