Gerald Wayne Lee
Funeral for Gerald Wayne Lee, 80, Elgin, will be at 1:00pm Monday, April 15, 2019 at Northwest Church of Christ in Lawton with Monte Jennings officiating. He passed away Friday, April 12, 2019 in Lawton with his family at his side. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Apache under direction of Crews Funeral Home.
Gerald Lee was born September 16, 1938 in Purcell, OK to Melvin and Inez (Gibson) Lee. He grew up and lived on the family farm. In 1956 he graduated from Apache High School. For his first two years post education he went to Cameron College and worked as a checker for Homeland. He received his undergraduate degree from East Central in 1961 and started teaching at Olney High School near Coalgate in 1961-1962. In 1962 he started teaching at Lawton High. In 1967 he moved his family to Atlanta, GA to attended Atlanta University on a full-ride scholarship, not knowing he was going to an all-black university during the height of the Civil Rights era. He earned his Master’s Degree in May of 1968 from Atlanta University. He taught at Lawton High School from 1962 until MacArthur High opened up. He was head of MacArthur’s math department until retirement in 1992. As a result of his instruction and mentorship, many of his students were prepared to attend MIT and WestPoint. Gerald met Barbara Tillman on a Senior Saints trip to Branson. They married August 16, 2016. They spent their time travelling in their pup trailer, even if it meant staying the night at Camp Doris. He was an elder at Western Hills Church of Christ and then at Porter Hill Church of Christ. For twenty years he served on many medical missionary trips to Mexico.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Lee of the home; Children: Teresa K. Waller and husband Kim ; Dr. Angela D. Lee; and Bradley W. Lee and wife Francy; Step-son, Lee J. Tillman; grandchildren: Steven Lee and wife Josie, Blake Waller, Jason Weyher, Olivia Lee, Addison Lee, Wendy Tillman, Aaron Tillman, Baron Tillman II and wife Lana, Rance Tillman and wife Lindsi, Landon Tillman and wife Kendra, Karissa Sykes and husband Jason, and Lee J Tillman; great-grandchildren: Josh Myers, Matthew Myers, Caleb Weyher, Brayden Weyher, Jace Waller, Kallie Waller, Caden Lee, Shelby Weeks, Brendan Weeks, McKenna Madsourivong, Baron Tillman III, Halie Bridges, Lane Bridges, Travis Tillman, Maggie Tillman, Sean Sykes, Colton Sykes, Austin Tillman, Levi Tillman, Jayde Tillman, and Romi Tillman; great-great grandkids: Robin Myers and Elias J. Vealsey; brother, Donald Lee and wife Chris, sister, Nancy Thurman and husband Barney, brother-in-law, Randall Sechrist and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, students and friends.
He is preceded in death by his first wife of 56 years, Janice K. Thompson; parents; Melvina dn Inez Lee; sister, Melva Sechrist, granddaughter, Wendy Weeks, step-sons, Tyson Tillman and Baron Tillman; and great-granddaughter, Lillie Tillman.
