Dr. Ana Rivera-Cruz
Word has been received of the death of Dr. Ana Rivera-Cruz, 78, Lawton.
She died Monday, March 10, 2014, in Lawton.
Arrangements are under direction of Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Home.
She was born Jan. 10, 1936, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, to Pedro Rivera Massanet and Petra Rodriguez de la Cruz. Dr. Rivera-Cruz was raised and attended school in Puerto Rico. After graduation from high school, she was accepted at the Madrid School of Medicine in Madrid, Spain, where she attended classes from 1956 to 1965. After receiving her Doctor of Medicine and Surgery degree, Dr. Rivera-Cruz spent three years at the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico prior to her internship at Lakewood City Hospital in Lakewood, Ohio. She then accepted a position as a resident and general surgeon at University Hospital, a division of Puerto Rico Medical Center. Dr. Rivera-Cruz filled a number of positions through the years including assistant chief of surgery at Bayamon Regional Hospital and as a general surgeon in a private practice in Santa Cruz, Puerto Rico, before moving to Oklahoma and working as a general surgeon at the Indian Hospital in Lawton. Dr. Rivera-Cruz retired in 1999 with accomplishments in general surgery, administering hyperallimentation and additional training at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass. Dr. Rivera-Cruz never married or had children. Practicing medicine was the love of her life.
Survivors include her brother, Rafael Rivera-Cruz, Cache, and a sister, Lucy R. Leach, Glendale, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Ramon.
