Carrie Estelle Schipps Holmstrom
Carrie Estelle Schipps Holmstrom, 79, of Lawton, passed away Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date to accommodate travel arrangements for her extensive family members and friends.
She was born to the late George and Alberta Seik Schipps on March 7, 1934. Carrie grew up in Washington and Eric, Pa. She was an avid swimmer who loved diving, and she spent her youth snow sledding and ice skating with her five siblings. She graduated from Washington High School and soon after went to work for TWA Airlines in Pittsburgh. After meeting the love of her life, Ronald J. Holmstrom, she left TWA and they married on July 20, 1957. Their union brought them two children: Cindy and Steven. Carrie was the consummate Army wife and doting mother. While Ron was active duty and fighting wars abroad, Carrie stood strong on the home front and was the perfect military spouse supporting and volunteering in the military organizations. She even learned and mastered the game of golf to share in one of Ron's passions. Anyone that ever played a round with her will tell you she was a fierce competitor on the greens. She was an active member of the Officer's Wives Club and the Southwest Oklahoma Women's Golf Association. She was close to her four sisters and brother and delighted in family gatherings whether in Lawton, Erie or Washington, Pa. After many years of military service, the Holmstrom clan finally landed in Lawton, where Ron and Carrie would actually catch their breath and retire. Carrie loved to host, entertain and travel until her health began to decline. She and Ron loved spending time in Hot Springs, Ark., and had even talked of actually moving there. Once she built her dream home ñ her pride and joy ñ all bets were off because she loved living in the Oklahoma countryside. Later, she would host her sisters at her home with game night and occasionally, a mean game of gin rummy would break out. Her most favorite times were poolside with Ron at sunset. Carrie was kind, caring, witty and generous to a fault and will be missed by those who loved her.
Carrie is survived by her husband; son and daughter-in-law, Steven Holmstrom and Amy Ewing-Holmstrom; daughter, Cindy Holmstrom Foster Burkett Hulett; two grandsons: Scott Holmstrom (Brittany), Todd Holmstrom (Lacey) and Carrie Hulett; great-grandchildren: Gavin Holmstrom and Jordan Holmstrom; sisters: Clea Bailey Camus and Viola Fawn Montgomery; nieces: Joan Pitre (Paul), Tacy Ross (Ron), Beth Ann Elzer (John), Anita Alwardt (Clift) and Kay Alwardt (Craig); and nephew, Donnie Schipps (Susan).
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Frances Crawford; and brother, Donsell Schipps.
A special thank you to the caregivers and nurses who took care of Carrie over the years.
