Voters approve changes in CIP
The turnout was light, but the message was strong, as Lawton voters approved a change in project categories for the 2016 Capital Improvements Program that will provide funding for digital upgrades and economic development.
The change, approved by 58.78 percent of the voters who turned out Tuesday or voted early, means the new and alternate water sources category was deleted, freeing an estimated $20 million for two new project categories: information technology (IT) upgrades for the City of Lawton and infrastructure to support industrial economic development.
Slightly more than 2,000 people voted, with 1,178 “yes” votes and 826 “no” votes from Lawton’s 28 precincts, traditional absentee and in-person absentee. The project category changes are immediate.
