Sergeants major to reunite at Fort Sill
For the first time ever, the Sergeants Major Association is having its reunion in the Lawton-Fort Sill community.
It's also the first time the association has ever had its reunion this close to a military post, according to retired Sgt. Maj. Jenny Clement of Lawton.
Retired Sgt. Maj. Aaron Boone of Lawton was responsible for getting it here and chairing the event. Boone is president of Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 319 and first vice president of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 751. He has attended six of the seven reunions of the Sergeants Major Association, and when the last one was held in Branson, Mo., two years ago, he put in a bid to have the 2014 reunion here and won.
Registration began Monday at the Apache Casino Hotel, host hotel for the reunion. As of 2:30 p.m., 62 retired sergeants major had registered, and assuming that each served at least 25 years in the Army, they represent a combined total of more than 1,500 years of service to their country. Many more were expected to arrive by the close of registration at 5 p.m.
