School recognized as tops in First in Math
St. Mary's Catholic School was recognized Friday as the top school in Oklahoma for the national math competition, First in Math.
Debra Knight, a representative for the educational program, awarded the school a certificate acknowledging St. Mary's as the top school in the state based on points, and as ranking 53rd in the nation out of more than 5,000 schools.
St. Mary's ranked second in the state last school year, Knight said.
She congratulated the 128 students competing for St. Mary's among the 1.5 million students who compete in the United States.
Students who earned high honors in First in Math at St. Mary's were also recognized and given certificates at the school's morning assembly Friday. Students ranging from prekindergarten to eighth grade were rewarded for their math skills.
First in Math is an online program that teaches children math by allowing them to compete in a game-like format in which they receive points for correctly solving math problems. The problems are grade appropriate and range in complexity from simple arithmetic to advanced algebra.
