Retreat kicks off Sill festivities
Fort Sill Commanding Gen. Wilson A. Shoffner gave the crowd a quick tutorial in how to pronounce “sesquicentennial” at a Founders Day retreat ceremony Tuesday celebrating the 150th anniversary of the frontier Army post’s founding.
He also led 150 soldiers — one for each year — in reciting the oath of enlistment at a mass re-enlistment conducted as part of the festivities.
“Re-enlistment is an incredibly important event in our Army. It’s how we build the backbone of the Army and the corps of noncommissioned officers that we have,” the general said.
Shoffner said it was appropriate to have the ceremony on the Old Post Quadrangle, because most of the buildings around it went up within a few years after the first stake was pounded on Jan. 8, 1869.
