Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics to be held Saturday
On Saturday, close to 100 people are expected to be on hand to take a chilly dive for a good cause.
The Lawton Area Polar Plunge benefitting Great Plains Special Olympics is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lawton Country Club with same-day registration at 10:15 a.m. Participants pay a registration fee — with the option of raising additional money through sponsors — before jumping through the February air and into the swimming pool at Lawton Country Club.
Donna Sparks, area director for Great Plains Special Olympics, said more than 100 participated last year and about 75 have signed up online for this year’s event. She said the event has been held for about seven years now. The Polar Plunge has a huge positive impact both on the Great Plains Special Olympics and the state games over the summer.
“It helps with our area games and helps in getting the athletes to Stillwater for the summer games,” Sparks said.
