Oktoberfest returns to Coliseum
It was the end of an era when Lawton’s German American Club decided to call it quits in July.
But that didn’t spell “finis” for their most beloved tradition – that frolicsome exultation over the rich bounty of the fall harvest.
We’re talking about Oktoberfest.
In 2010 club members weary after years of labor-intensive preparations decided to turn the job over to the catering staff of the Comanche County Fairgrounds. At the same time they handed over their treasured recipes and a list of sources for authentic German foods.
They faithfully came to the Great Plains Coliseum each year to make sure the caterers got it right. And they weren’t bashful about letting them know if the ingredients were in any way wanting.
Who knows? Perhaps they still will.
Profitability-wise, this is the fairgrounds’ biggest event of the year, Fairgrounds Executive Director Richard Pool said. More than 4,000 people came through the doors last year.
