LHS Class of ‘69 surprises vets with handmade quilts
During its 50th reunion in September, the Lawton High School Class of 1969 honored 16 of its former classmates for their years serving in the military.
Each veteran was presented with a handmade quilt created by the members of the Quilts of Valor Foundation.
Veterans honored were: Dale Allredge, Tommy Blewett, Bobby Gilbert, Matt Hunt, Klaus Johnson, Donald M. Kennedy, Gil Martinez, Roger Gunkel, Terry McDougle, Dwight Meadors, Don Meloche, Roy Myers, Nick Picek, Willie Tillman, Raymond Yeats. Mark Kensell was unable to be present.
Classmate Sarah Wheatley is a volunteer with Cimarron Quilters in Stillwater and helped organize the surprise quilt presentation. She said paying tribute to service members has special significance for those who grow up in a military town like Lawton.
