Council names new city manager

A South Texas man is Lawton’s new city manager, City Council members announced Tuesday.

Michael Cleghorn, the Public Works director for Copperas Cove, Texas, was one of four finalists who was interviewed by the council and its consultant (Strategic Government Resources) during several weeks of work that had the council trying to replace retiring City Manager Jerry Ihler before his final day on Friday. Tuesday, council members returned from executive session and made their choice known: Cleghorn will become Lawton’s top administrator effective Feb. 11. Until then, Assistant City Manager Bart Hadley will be acting city manager, a choice the council also made Tuesday in executive session.

Cleghorn, a U.S. Army veteran and native Texan, was one of 26 applicants (including six from Oklahoma and seven from Texas) who applied for Ihler’s position. He has been Copperas Cove’s Public Works director for two years, working in a city that is part of the Killeen-Fort Hood metro area.
