City water lines to get ice slurry
The City of Lawton's water distribution division will begin a new water main cleaning procedure in and around South 11th Street Feb. 7, one that will affect businesses in the area.
The work, to be divided into three sections between Feb. 7-12, will affect South 11th Street from West Gore Boulevard to Southwest J Avenue; and Southwest A, Southwest B, Southwest C, Southwest E and Southwest F avenues between Southwest 9th Street and South 11th Street.
In the process, called ice pigging, city crews will pump an "ice slurry" through line segments to clean them. City officials said the technique is more effective than flushing water lines, especially those that might be causing discolored water, because it is more effective in removing particles and sediments from pipe walls.
City officials said the method combines the operational advantages of flushing with scrubbing action to remove build-up. It also uses less water than traditional cleaning methods, with minimal down time to the main.
