Airport board approves lease for military use of hangar

A project to renovate the largest hangar at Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport for military use moved closer to reality Thursday, with approval of agreements for city funding and a project manager.

Members of the Lawton Metropolitan Area Airport Authority, meeting in special session to help fast track the renovation, were reacting to City Council action in December that designated economic development funds to cover the cost of needed hangar renovations, with most of those funds to be reimbursed later this year by state funding. Thursday's action, which included approval of a preliminary memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Fort Sill and designation of local construction firm CDBL as the project manager, will help airport officials meet Fort Sill's stated deadline of taking control of the hangar by Feb. 1.
