SW Oklahoma hoops takes small step forward this week
Southwest Oklahoma high school hoops took a small step forward this past weekend.
True it was, that more than a few area Class A and B basketball teams saw their seasons end in regionals. However, 15 different boys and girls squads advanced to this week's area tournaments two more than last season.
Maybe it wasn't a giant leap forward, but plenty of hopes remain afloat on the hardwood. Five schools boys teams from Fort Cobb, Hollis, Cyril, Tipton, as well as Sterling's girls all won regional titles and are in prime position to reach the state tournament.
But honestly, there should be 16 area schools playing this weekend. We documented the rough-and-tumble nature of Class A Area III's boys regional in Elgin, which featured four ranked teams in No. 5 Hollis, No. 8 Fletcher, No. 14 Velma-Alma and No. 16 Alex. We knew someone in that group would be on the outside looking in this week.
That someone ended up being the Fletcher Wildcats, who were the only Class A top-10 team to face a first-round true road game not at a neutral site when they played at Velma last Thursday.
