RollerGirls get season’s first win
Lawton's 580 RollerGirls marked the season's first win Saturday in a road bout in Springfield, Mo.
Following last week's loss in the home opener against Mo-Kan, 580 trekked this week to Missouri to battle the All Stars. The RollerGirls took the win, 266-191.
With an even more abbreviated lineup than usual, the team took eight skaters dubbed "The Mighty Eight," said spokesperson Marie Berberea, a.k.a. Molly Meet Your Maker. She said it's a term the team has used at least once each season.
The 580RG jammers had no issue getting the lead to maintain the advantage in both halves, Berberea said. Only one blocker rested on the bench at any given time with many jammers going out for back-to-back jams.
"Sarina Baltierra, SCARlett JoHatchet, showed impressive endurance by staying out for two-minute jams at a time to outscore the opposing jammer who was effectively being trapped by 580's blockers: Brandi Smith, Halfpint; Brittany Katvala, Hell'N Agony; Alicia Vernor, Kurvacious Pride; Heather Maynard, Shortcut; and Brittanie Bowsher, Brittanie Smears," Berberea said. "In the second half, 580 took a bigger lead after Baltierra scored 29 points with help from sweeps setup by Vernor on a power jam (Springfield's jammer was in the penalty box). Rice scored 10 points in the following jam to make it 178-99, for 580."
MVP Jammer was Sarah Pineau, a.k.a. Sparkplug; and blocker title went to Alicia Vernor, a.k.a. Kurvacious Pride.
"Incredible is an understatement when describing my teammates tonight," said Baltierra, team captain. "We had our first home game to a tough team last Saturday and then we hit the road for 6 hours to play with only eight players. And we came home with the win. Most teams would of cancelled and complained about our luck. I'm so proud of our hard work on the track, but I'm more proud of my teammates for taking this challenge this week with a positive and never give up attitude."
The next home bout for 580, now 1-2 on the young season, will be April 28 at Great Plains Coliseum. 580 is ranked 274 out of the top 340 teams in the Women's Flat Track Derby Association's Feb. 28 rankings.
The team continues to seek new skaters, refs and volunteers.
