LHS drops heartbreaker to Norman North
Up 1-0 with one out and the bases empty in the top of the 7th, Lawton High softball seemed poised for its second win of the season.
Two doubles, two singles and an error later, the Wolverines suffered a heartbreaking 3-1 loss to Norman North at home.
Mindi Sherran had scattered four Timberwolves hits over the first six innings for Lawton High (1-5), but it all changed in the seventh. Maddie Morris ripped a lead-off double to left, seemingly sucking all of LHS' hopes with it. She hesitated rounding second and Aliyah Bruton threw Morris out at third to send the LHS crowd into a frenzy.
Hope was back on their side until Kayli Grove doubled and scored on a single by Daisha Reece to tied the game. Reece then scored on a double by pinch hitter Madison Crabtree to give North a 2-1 lead. Aubree Downs then hit a sharp grounder to Bruton at shortstop who threw to first for what looked a like a sure out until the umpire ruled Downs beat the throw. Crabtree took off for third and Lexie Tahsequah's throw was out of Kelsey Nadeau's reach at third allowing Crabtree to get up a score.
After playing solid softball for 19 outs, it all came crashing down in five batters that all had hits.
"Maybe we should have backed up the left fielder, I don't know," LHS head coach Kyle Brierton said. "They were well-struck balls. We had the error at third that we shouldn't have thrown. That would've made it 2-1 instead of 3-1. They just came up and hit the ball."
