Junior Golf League aims to mix fun with fundamentals
Marco and Ashley Gagliardi enjoy spending time at the golf course. But they also wanted to make sure their children were enjoying themselves, too. Were their two sons, who enjoy spending time with their dad, into golf as well? And how could they make the sport of golf fun and interesting for their children?
As it turns out, they weren’t the only family in Lawton asking these questions.
The Gagliardis have been members at Lawton Country Club for a little more than a year. And as much as Marco enjoyed playing golf, his sons, Kade, 6, and Hayden, 4, weren’t always enthralled.
One day this summer, Ashley wondered aloud to her husband why Lawton didn’t have a youth golf league. As parents wanting to nurture the game in their children, but not having an adequate avenue to do so, the Gagliardis weren’t alone. Marco said plenty of his friends played golf, and many of those friends have children who also play. Shortly after, the Lawton Junior Golf League was created, in a partnership with Lawton Country Club.
“We had a hard time keeping them out here, wanting them to come out here, wanting them to play,” Marco Gagliardi, who is also the head boys basketball coach at MacArthur High School, said. “We thought this was the best way to keep them engaged and keep them coming back.”
