Buffs sweep pair from Aggie softball
CANYON, Texas – Powerful West Texas University swept a Lone Star Conference doubleheader from Cameron University Sunday, taking a 9-6 win in the first game and then a 3-1 decision in the second to sweep the three-game weekend series.
Cameron is now 26-15 this season and 13-11 in Lone Star Conference play, as WT improves to 34-6 overall and 17-4 in league contests. A&M-Commerce and Angelo State share the lead in the standings at 20-4, then come WT at 17-4 and Tarleton at 17-7. Cameron is in fifth three games ahead of Texas Woman's University at 10-11. A&M-Kingsville is seventh at 11-13.
Only the top six teams make the conference tournament, so Cameron can really aid its cause when it hosts Western New Mexico for a pair of doubleheaders Friday and Saturday. The first three games will count as LSC contests. WNMU is last in the league at 2-22, so if the Aggies have a great chance to clinch a tournament berth this weekend.
It was a much tougher foe Sunday as the Buffs dominated. In game one, the Black and Gold trailed early as WT scored a run on a solo homer in both the first and the fourth innings. CU finally got on the board in the fifth, as Annie Combs drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Kaitlyn Alvarado singled in the second run to tie the game.
However, the Lady Buffs answered right back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs, two on another Ashley Hardin homer, to take a 7-2 lead.
