Beatty picks Oral Roberts University
ANADARKO Anadarko senior shooting guard Ashley Beatty on Saturday made a verbal committment to play basketball at Oral Roberts University for the 2015-2016 season, lifting a burden off the shoulders that nearly shot her school to a state title last winter.
"It's a huge relief. I had some other choices, but I went and toured (at ORU) and it felt like the right thing to do. Of course I was stressed about it, but when you know, you just know," said Beatty, who averaged 22 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game last season while leading the Warriors to the Class 4A state title game.
Verbal commitments are non-binding. Basketball players may sign in the early period from Nov. 12-19, or the regular period from April 15 to May 20.
Beatty, regarded as one of the best all-around players in Southwest Oklahoma, said a big factor in her decision was the chance to play with like-minded people at a school that practices her Christian faith. Since her sophomore season, Beatty, whose sister Lakota plays at Oklahoma State, said her spiritual strength has grown right along with her jump shot.
"(ORU head coach Misti Cussen) is just so caring and is really strong in her faith, and you can tell just by talking to her for a couple minutes," Beatty said. "I feel like college might be stressful, and I think having those kind of people around really helps.
