Antlers stun LHS; Mac gets back in win column
EDMOND — Logan Ward kicked a 55-yard field goal on the final play of regulation and then boomed a much easier 22-yarder in overtime to lift Deer Creek-Edmond to a stunning 17-14 victory over Lawton High School, dropping the Wolverines to 0-2 in district and making their bid for the playoffs much tougher.
When the Wolverines took a 14-3 lead with 9:25 left in the game, it appeared that once again, Antlers were going to come up short against LHS.
However, the LHS offense, on two occasions in the final few minutes, was unable to get much going, giving the Antlers hope. After a short LHS punt, DC raced 42 yards on just three plays to score a touchdown and when it converted the two-point PAT, the score was 14-11 with less than four minutes remaining.
Once again the LHS offense got a chance and it took a surprise bootleg run by Elijah Reyes on a third-and-10 to get the chains moved with one minute remaining.
One play netted four yards and it appeared that LHS might be able to run out the clock so the Wolverines went into the victory formation a bit early and that play didn’t take enough time off the clock. Finally DC forced a fourth-and-13 at the LHS 38 and that’s when a fierce rush came up with the difference, a blocked punt.
The Antlers had seven seconds left and they tried a deep pass on the first play from the LHS 38 but it missed.
That’s when Ward came out to the field and tried the 55-yarder. It just cleared the crossbar which started a wild celebration.
