Aggies advance to NCAA Championships
For the second straight year, Cameron's men's tennis team has advanced to the NCAA National Championships, earning the right by beating Western New Mexico, 5-2, Monday afternoon at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.
Cameron will face either Concordia (N.Y.) or Merrimack out of East Region No. 1 in the round of 16 on Wednesday, May 14, 3 p.m. in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Doubles play has been a struggle for the Aggies this season and 13 times this season Cameron trailed into singles play. However, Monday was different and for the only the fifth time this year CU would take all three slots.
"I gave the ultimate challenge to my boys before the match started and told them what was on the line, and they got out there and kept working," said head coach James Helvey. "Our main goal was to keep the high energy, and we did and we got all three (doubles matches). It felt really good going into singles, but you always have to be cautious when you're up 3-0 because you can deflate a little bit."
Cameron's advantage paid dividends as the play warmed up under the Oklahoman sun and WNMU would take the four-slot 7-5, 6-1, and the top singles slot 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
