Radio Roadshow: Arts and music fill Campus Corner
For the final week of being out of the confines of Studio Blanket/Tent Fort, the DJ and the scribe hit the street for Roadshow: Campus Corner featuring some of the best local country musicians mixed with independent artisans.
Shailah Red Elk, owner of The Native Hippy and arch-instigator to Sunday's celebration of independent artisans said she couldn't have been happier with the weather, the turnout and the participation. She hopes it will be at least a twice-annual event and is gearing up for another event closer to the beginning of the fall semester.
The parking lot of Campus Corner, which houses The Native Hippy, was dotted with small tents featuring clothing, art and other products made by creators that live the "Keep It Local" ethos Red Elk carries as a banner for her art/business ethics. She said turned out to be what she'd hoped: a place to allow creativity flow and be felt and without a lot of information booths that divert from the day's meaning.
With food, drink and a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy, of course there had to be a great soundtrack to accompany. The singing Marine Wes Brown kicked off the day's musical entertainment. He made fast fans of those who hadn't caught him before. A prior guest on the radio show, expect him back this summer.
Here's Brown during his debut at the studio: •Wes Brown — "Broken Man" — https://youtu.be/QqTsoMdnkqw.
Performing as a one-man version of The Black Sheep, Cade Roth kept time with a kick drum while strumming guitar, playing harmonica and, what he's best at, singing. With drummer Ryan Joyce manning his own art booth, Roth did a fine job covering percussion duties to the band's first single of its self-titled debut, "Small Town Blues." It holds up well with a song slated for the new album, "What's Left of Me Now."
A favorite of the day was Roth's take on a Band classic. Here's video from his last time at the studio: •Cade Roth — "Ophelia" — https://youtu.be/_ksnSJ2HHug.
Always a pro and with one heckuva singing voice, Cody Newby followed with a warm set of audience favorites. From original numbers like "Pretty Little Lie" and "When Grandpa Sang 'How Great Thou Art'," he also has a knack with taking other people's music to new heights. His covers of "Tulsa Time," "Drift Away," and "My Girl" built perfectly to his finale by Travis Tritt, "I Don't Love You Anymore."
Here's a Newby wild card from a recent trek to the studio: •Cody Newby — "All About That Bass" — https://youtu.be/4AdqT1t91Ls.
A trio that's always a treat with their special blend of Wild Prairie Mountain Folk Rock, Just Strangers took over the stage for a barn burner of a set. From "Walking Cane" to "Corn Liquor" and peaking with a one-of-a-kind take on the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil," they proved a mid-afternoon energy boost.
A favorite song slated for the band's debut CD that's under productions: •Just Strangers — "Deep Ellum Blues" — https://youtu.be/INuunz5Cc_8.
The day's final two acts may have miscalculated the sun when they chose to follow the Johnny Cash path of wearing black shirts to the stage. Trent Logan, who was performing his first live show, said it was a lesson learned. With a set that kicked off with a wonderful take on Ryan Adams' "Sweet Carolina," he'll have plenty more opportunities to learn the ropes. He should be in the studio in the coming months.
Closing out the day's music, Zack Crow made the most of his slot. "The Only One You Know" was one of those songs that hit peak performance Sunday. A strong, original singer/songwriter, you can hear the studio version of one of the day's highlights: •Zack Crow — "The Way It Goes" — https://youtu.be/WMSWQvUNQ_8.
The Campus Corner experience feels like something that's going to take hold and shine a light — and a lot of community love — on Lawton's local arts and music community. That's as good a cause as you can ask for.
"Onward and upward!"

After taking Studio Blanket/Tent Fort on the road for the April editions of Today's Best Soundemonium! with Steve Carr, a.k.a. Steve-O, and the columnist, we really put the pirate into the concept of being as close to a pirate radio broadcast as possible. From the Railhead to Red Dirt Reloaded, the church that is the drum house and the revelation that is the Campus Corner outdoor fest, we ran a gamut.
However, with pirates, you get scurvy and rickets. I'm not sure we're not pirates right now. We're both worn out from the road and ready for return to the confines of Studio Blanket/Tent Fort enriched from the experiences and ready for a visit from our next musical guest. Tune in!
