LCT season kicks-off with ‘Mamma Mia!’
Mamma Mia, here we go again.
It’s time for another season of Lawton Community Theatre. And this year the group will hit the ground running with one of the most popular musicals in recent memory, “Mamma Mia!”
Written by British playwright Catherine Johnson and based on the songs of the pop band ABBA, “Mamma Mia!” is a truly global phenomena having been performed on stages around the world since opening in London’s West End in 1999. Though it is perhaps most well known for the film adaptation, starring the likes of Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan.
The musical is set on a small Greek island, where Sophie dreams of a perfect wedding. The only problem, she wants her father to give her away — a father she doesn’t know. That is until she discovers her mother’s old diary, and stories about three possible father figures: Sam, Bill and Harry. She secretly invites all three to the wedding and hilarity ensues.
“It’s an absolutely hysterical show, mostly because of the people who are in it, they are so funny and have a natural comedic timing that is just incredible to watch,” Charlotte Oates, the play’s director, said.
Oates, who most recently directed the theatre’s run of High School Musical last year, is no slouch when it comes to managing a stage full of actors on a big production. But by her own admission, directing “Mamma Mia!” has been “kicking her tail.” Not because of the difficulty of the production, but rather, because she has recently found herself in a new position elsewhere in life.
