Water main break leaves Elgin without water

An accidental break in a water main occurred in Elgin at about noon Wednesday, causing Elgin School District to close schools for the rest of the day.

According to Larry Thoma, mayor of Elgin, a water main was damaged at SW 4th and I Avenue by workers employed by contractor TDS Telecom.

“It will be a couple more hours before the break will be fixed and the water will be turned back on,” Thoma said at approximately 12:15 p.m. “The break affected the town of Elgin as a whole, including the local school district.”

“The Elgin School District dismissed all schools because of a water leak,” Superintendent Nate Meraz said. “We gave an hour and 10 minute warning that schools were going to be dismissed about mid-morning. We gave a text alert through our notification system.”
