Teen faces charge in jail escape
An 18-year-old Walters man jailed on a misdemeanor count has been charged with a felony for an ill-fated escape attempt, authorities said.
Damoinique Stephenson made his initial appearance Tuesday in Cotton County District Court. Bond was set at $100,000.
According to court documents, Stephenson was in jail after pleading not guilty to a misdemeanor charge. Undersheriff David Johnston said he was working inside the jail when at 3 p.m. Monday he heard a disturbance and was told there was a "runner." Clad in his orange inmate jumpsuit, Stephenson was seen running into a nearby alley between Oklahoma and Kansas avenues, according to a court affidavit. Johnston said he found Stephenson, who by then had removed the jumpsuit and was now clad in jeans and a T-shirt, lying behind a bush on the corner of the home at 215 E. Kansas. He was taken back into custody.
