Stuffed bears continue Winter Wishes tradition

ELGIN — Elgin Middle School had the bear necessities covered for this year’s Winter Wishes.

Giant stuffed teddy bears have become a common theme in the program’s three-year existence. Several students asked for giant stuffed bears for themselves or friends during the inaugural Winter Wishes two years ago. The idea grew more popular last year and even more bears were given out. This year featured so many wishes for the stuffed animals that it took a community effort to amass so many — an undertaking that bearly gathered enough to fulfill each wish.

“Anita (West) and I usually shop Black Friday together and that’s when we get all of the bears for Winter Wishes,” said co-creator Melissa Evon. “This year, I went to London during that time and I was worried about how we’re going to get all of these bears. So we decided, let’s throw it out on Facebook and see who could help us.”
