Tipton, Fort Cobb girls set up consolation showdown
Both the Fort Cobb-Broxton and Tipton girls are now one win closer to next weekend’s Class A state tournament.
The No. 8 Mustangs and No. 13 Tigers both dispatched their opponents in the consolation bracket of the Area III tournament on Thursday in Cache to set up a head-to-head showdown at 1:30 p.m. today. The winner will move onto Saturday’s Area consolation championship with a state tourney ticket on the line.
Fort Cobb (24-4) saw its miserable shooting woes continue in the Area tourney opener, but the Mustangs were able to breeze past Waurika, 52-32, thanks to a strong defensive outing a lift from Ashlynn Lewis, who scored a team-high 14 points.
“For some reason we still can’t make a shot,” said Fort Cobb coach Blake Clift, whose Mustangs went an abysmal 1 of 16 from downtown. “It’s frustrating but hopefully tomorrow we come out of our slump. The girls are playing hard and with intensity, though. We’re gonna need that against Tipton.”
Fort Cobb, which led 23-13 at halftime, got a balanced attack alongside Lewis as Mariah Gonzales and Adysen Wilson each scored eight points while Aloni Taylor chipped in seven and Jillian Stinson added six.
