Owls sweep Battle of Wichitas on hardwood
ELGIN — Yannik Gruenwald and Connor Slater only had to glance at each other to know what the other’s lofty thoughts were.
So when the 6-6 Gruenwald lofted a perfect touch pass to his 6-6 senior teammate for an emphatic alley-oop, they both knew the jubilation that was about to ensue.
Slater slammed home Gruenwald’s pass in the middle of a 15-0 Elgin run during the second quarter of the 12th-ranked Owls’ 66-49 victory over rival No. 17 Cache in the first chapter of the Battle of the Wichitas hardwood edition on Tuesday night.
“He’s my partner. I know if he has a chance to score, I’m gonna get him open and feed him,” said Gruenwald who scored 19 points to match Slater’s 19. “I love being able to get Connor attention. When he’s up on the rim, he can have it.”
