Gilbert comes off bench, powers Outlaws past Cache, 20-7
CACHE – Jace Gilbert came off the bench to lead the Marlow Outlaws to a 20-7 upset over Cache that spoiled the Bulldogs’ Homecoming at Ulrich Stadium Friday night. Gilbert threw two long touchdowns passes and kicked two field goals to pace the Marlow victory.
Gilbert didn’t start, but entered on Marlow’s second possession and led the Outlaws the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs were coming off a huge zero week win over 5A Altus while Marlow lost its traditional opener with Chickasha.
Cache started the game as if it would dominate, driving 72 yards on the game’s opening possession on 14 plays while taking almost eight minutes off the first quarter clock. The drive ended at the Marlow eight when a fourth down play was stopped short.
Three plays later, Kierce Franzen pounced on an Outlaw fumble in the endzone to give Cache the lead. Ralph Fawaz booted the conversion to make it 7-0 with 3:31 left in the first.
That turned out to be the only points the Bulldogs would score as the Marlow defense stiffend and Cache would hurt its cause with penalties.
The Bulldogs maintained the 7-0 lead until midway through the second period. Marlow had moved from its five yard-line to the Cache 20 mainly thanks to big passes from Gilbert to Tag Allen for 35 and 38 yards respectively that would be a preview of things to come. On fourth-and-eight from the 20, Gilbert boomed a 37-yard field goal to put the Outlaws on the scoreboard at 7-3 with 6:26 to go in the first half.
Later, after a Bulldog drive had stalled at the Marlow 46, Fawaz had his punt tipped so that it only went 24 yards to the 22.
