Field goal, onside kick recovery help seal 23-20 victory for Cache
CACHE — Cache held on in the fourth quarter thanks to a stout defensive effort to beat their fellow Bulldogs from Altus, 23-20, Friday night before a large crowd at Cache’s Ulrich Stadium.
The Bulldogs from Cache started off with a quick turnover as an Altus fumble recovered by junior Hunter Tate at the Altus 28 put Cache in business.
Two plays later Cache senior Blake Young scored on a 28-yard run around left end to give the boys from Cache a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter. Senior kicker Ralph Fawaz would add the extra point for a 7-0 Cache lead.
On Altus’ second offensive possession, the visitors again turned the ball over, this time with a fumble that Cache recovered at the Altus 41. A big run by Tate was negated by a holding penalty and Cache couldn’t convert its second takeaway of the game into points.
On the ensuing drive, Altus covered 80 yards in eight plays with 38 of those yards coming on five consecutive bruising carries by Altus senior fullback Cabe Dickerson.
Altus senior running back D’marco DeLaPaz earned the last 24 yards on two carries, one a 24 yard scamper down to the Cache 1-yard line and the second a one yard burst for a 7-7 tie with just 40 seconds left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter Cache gifted Altus with a short field when a backward pass by senior quarterback Barney Birgenheier to junior running back Kynel Daniel was fumbled and recovered by Altus at the Cache 49-yard line.
