Elgin senior Madison eyes future at Alabama
Ask Elgin senior receiver/middle linebacker Austyn Madison his favorite team and he will tell you it is without a doubt the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Sporting a 2017 Alabama national championship t-shirt, Madison said he has been a Tide fan his entire life.
“I didn’t really have a choice,” Madison said. “Now I am probably the most die-hard fan in the entire family.”
Madison, who was actually born in North Carolina and who lived there until about three years ago, said his entire family consists of Alabama fans, having come originally from Pensacola, Fla., which is less than 20 miles from the Alabama state line and is a hotbed of Tide fans.
Madison loves Alabama so much he has already applied and been accepted as a student at the university beginning next fall. Though he has lived in Elgin for the last three years, and before that in Sanford, N.C., Madison has been to the Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa at least four times to watch the Tide football team in action.
He said he also caught another Crimson Tide game in College Station, Texas against Texas A&M.
“I just love going there to watch a game,” he said. “I love the crowds and the tradition at Alabama.”
Madison said its hasn’t always been easy being a huge Alabama fan living in Oklahoma. He said all last season his friends would trash talk him, especially fans of the Oklahoma Sooners, but he said he got his revenge following the clash between the Tide and Sooners last season.
“I definitely gave it (trash talking) right back to them,” he said with a smile.
