Dalke takes third at Junior PGA
BRYAN, Texas Trailing by six shots in the final round of the Junior PGA Championship, Brad Dalke needed to make something good happen Friday and fast if he wanted to clinch a title.
The Hobart resident nearly did it, getting within two strokes after five straight birdies from holes nine through 13, but Sam Burns closed out his round with five straight pars after a pair of bogeys to win the tournament at Miramont Country Club in Bryan, Texas.
Burns finished at 10 under, three shots ahead of Dalke (69-70-69-69), who finished at 7 under. It was the second straight third-place finish in the event for Dalke, a University of Oklahoma commit.
By winning, Burns is granted a sponsor exemption for the PGA Tour's Texas Valero Open next year. But it didn't come without a little drama.
Burns, an LSU commit, left the door open for Dalke and Gordon Neale (2nd place, 8 under) when he bogeyed holes 12 and 13. Dalke had a window to make a move, but leveled off with two pars after his fifth-straight birdie came on the 180-yard par-3 13th. Dalke later bogeyed the par-4 12th.
Dalke shot a combined 2 over on the par 4s all week. Par 5s were a different story, where he was 6 under.
Dalke birdied the par-5 18th in each of the first three rounds and, with another in the fourth, could have tied for second overall in the tournament. Instead, he made par to wrap up his week and settled for third. It was Dalke's third top-3 finish in a major tournament this season. He grabbed third at the Junior Invitation at Sage Valley, and second at the Terra Cotta Invitational.
