Battle of the Wichitas renewed tonight
Both Chalmer Wyatt and Faron Griffin experienced the Battle of the Wichitas when they were in school at Elgin and Cache, respectively.
That is, if the rivalry even had gained that monicker yet.
“When I was in school, it wasn’t nearly as big as it is now,” Griffin said.
Now, each as head coach at their alma mater, Wyatt and Griffin will lead their teams into one of the biggest prep rivalries in the area as Elgin travels 29 miles to play the Bulldogs tonight.
But while the fans and players might play up the levels of “hatred” between the schools and towns, Griffin said he doesn’t necessarily buy into the hype. The rivalry is much like that with a sibling, Griffin said. Not only does he have plenty of friends from Elgin, he’s friends with many of the Elgin coaches. Griffin “thinks the world of Chalmer” and said he was thrilled when Wyatt got the job this past year.
“I told him when he got the job, ‘We’ll be enemies one week of the year. The rest of the year, I want your kids to win and flourish.’”
