Apache comes back from 15 down, shocks Walters, 27-21
APACHE – Morgan Claborn crashed over the left side with 1:06 remaining to propel Apache to comeback 27-21 win over Walters in a District A-4 contest at Elmer Graham Stadium Friday night.
The Warriors trailed the Blue Devils 21-6 at halftime following two quarter of turnovers and strange plays. After intermission Apache came out with increased intensity on both sides of the ball to get back in the game. The Warriors kept the Walters offense bottled up most of the second half.
After letting Walters move from its own 15 to the Warrior 47, Apache tightened up and forced a punt after pushing the Blue Devils back to their own 41.
Taking over at its own 36, Apache moved to the Walters 46 in three plays. On second-and-two , claborn found Rylan Penn behind the Blue Devil secondary for a touchdown to cut the lead to 21-12 with 4:11 left in the third quarter.
The Warriors forced Walters into a three-and-out. Kason Johnson had to punt from his own 20. Austin Scherzer took the punt on the run at the Blue Devil 41 and returned it 35 yards to the six yard-line.
On second-and-goal from the five, Claborn kept over left guard for the score. Riley tacked on the extra point to make the score 21-19 with 1:39 left in the third.
On the ensuing possession, Kam Mullins picked off a Johnson pass and returned it to the Walters 23.
