John Barrett Romero

Memorial service for retired Sgt. First Class John Barrett Romero, 72, Lawton, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017, in St. John Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Bill Schneider, pastor, officiating.

Retired Sgt. First Class John Barrett Romero died Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at his home.

He was born June 6, 1944, in Gustine, Calif., to Juan Cano and Bertha Bernice Romero. He grew up in the San Joaquin Valley and attended high school in Chico, Calif. He later graduated from Cameron University. He married Bonnie McLean on Aug. 8, 1965, in Lordsburg, N.M.

John retired from the U.S. Army in 1981 and was a veteran of Vietnam. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Two Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, Six Overseas Service Bars, Recruiter Badge, Army Commendation Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal Fourth Award, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon Third Award and Sharpshooter hand grenade and rifle M-16 badges.

Following his retirement, he worked as a logistics manager for civil service at Fort Sill. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He was also a life member of the DAV and the VFW and was a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, of the home; three children and their spouses: Richard Ray and Lisa Romero of Hermon, Maine, Rita Renee and Mike Anderson of Oklahoma City, and Nickie Aileen and Earl Finn of Merrimack, N.H.; 11 grandchildren: Jamie Young and husband Brandon, Julie Bolton and husband Todd, Jesie Romero, Chance Romero, Amy Anderson, Adam Anderson, Andrew Anderson, Aaron Anderson, Megan Finn, Amber Finn and A.J. Finn; three great-grandchildren: Leo, Ashlynn and Aaron; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Christina and Donald Manning and Delores and Bob Lee; and his brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Judi Romero.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Matthew Edward Anderson; and a sister, Marie Romero.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017, at Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.
