Funeral for Joe Louis Hunter Sr., 81, Lawton, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Tabernacle of Faith, 1116 SW "I" Ave., Lawton, with Bishop Quinton Pollard officiating.
Joe Louis Hunter Sr., died Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at a Lawton hospital.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Lawton, under direction of Howard-Harris Funeral Services, Lawton.
He was born Feb. 24, 1936, to Robert Lee and Mamie Hunter in Grandfield. He spent most of his life in Grandfield, graduating from Boyd High School in Frederick. He loved sports, growing up playing baseball for the Negro Baseball Team ó the Grandfield Bears as a catcher. Later in life, he was a farm laborer, and worked for Simpson Gain in Grandfield and Preston Dairy in Burkburnett, Texas.
Survivors include his four children: Derven, Joe Jr., and Kishia Hunter, of Lawton, and Jesse Hunter of Frederick; one grandson, JJ Hunter; two sisters-in-law: Brenda Parchman, of Lawton, and Myrtle Crosby, of Hinesville, Ga.; three sons: Kevin Brown and wife Becky, of Overland Park, Kan., Zachary Mason, of Oklahoma City, and Terral Mason, of Grandfield; his nephew, Bishop Quinton Pollard and wife Diane of Lawton, who have been so supportive; and his aunt, Christine Love, of Grandfield; as well as many other relatives, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Mae; his parents, brothers and sisters.
Visitation,viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 28, 2017, in funeral home chapel, 1005 SW "C" Ave.
