Funeral for Bill Ward, 91, Lawton, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at 8th and Lee Church of Christ with Donnie Ward officiating.
Bill Ward passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018, in Lawton.
A private family burial will be held at Highland Cemetery under direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home.
Mr. Ward was born Feb. 7, 1927, in Lawton to Finis Waldo and Nellie Angeline (Sims) Ward. He grew up in Lawton, where he attended Lawton High School and served as senior class president. After graduating in 1945, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in World War II. He then worked for Wertz Produce and delivered to the Old South Cafeteria, where he met the love of his life, Jaunita Faye Pointer. They were married on Jan. 15, 1948, in Lawton. For a short time, they lived in Madera, Calif., then returned to Lawton, where Mr. Ward worked for Wertz Produce again and PSO before beginning his career as a police officer for the Lawton Police Department.
He rode a three-wheel motorcycle, worked downtown traffic and later moved to the patrol division. In 1988, he retired as a major after 32 years of service. While working at the police department, he also had many part-time jobs so that Jaunita could be at home with the children. His part-time jobs included working security at Doe Doe Park and the Lawton Speedway, as well as dipping ice cream at LaSill's Ice Cream Parlor. He and Jaunita traveled to many places throughout their lives. Jaunita passed away Jan. 12, 2010. Mr. Ward was an active member of the 8th and Lee Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and elder for many years. He loved dogs of all kinds, and they loved him.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Ronnie and Sandy Ward of Duncan and Donnie and Janice Ward of Lawton; his daughter and son-in-law, Anita Carol "Sissy" and Jerry Brown of Lawton; brother-in-law, Bill Davis, of Paris, Texas; seven grandchildren and their spouses: Dr. Chris and Melissa Ward, Corey Ward, Janna and Dr. Travis Montgomery, Zack and Megan Ward, Jeremiah and Paige Brown, Dr. Sam and Crislyn Ward, Amanda and Andrew Smith; 11 great-grandchildren: Cassie Ward, Cami Ward, Caden Ward, Candace Ward, Joel Ward, Braden Brown, Wyatt Ward, Amalee Smith, Emery Ward, Axton Smith, and Andersyn Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jaunita Faye Ward; and his sisters, Margie Ann Davis and Carla Sue Patton.
A special viewing and visitation for family and friends will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2018, at the funeral home.
