Zarle says he won't run again
Ward 6 Councilman Richard Zarle said Thursday that he will not seek re-election.
Zarle holds one of three City Council seats that will qualify for new terms in 2014 (the others are Wards 7 and 8). While the municipal filing period for those Lawton council seats isn't until the first week of April, Zarle said he wanted to make his announcement early to give potential candidates in Ward 6 time to decide if they will actually file for election.
Zarle is in the midst of his second consecutive term, after being elected in 2009, but also served two terms on the council between 1992 and 1996. Under City of Lawton election guidelines, candidates for election (this year, Wards 6, 7 and 8) will file declarations of candidacy April 7-9, then face a primary election June 24. Because Zarle was last elected under old city charter provisions, he could hold his seat until March 2015 rather than surrendering it in January 2015 (which the existing charter specifies), but Zarle said he hasn't yet decided whether he will stay until March or cede the seat in January.
