Suspects in murder appear in court

ALTUS - Two Lawton residents arrested last week in connection with an Altus murder in August made their initial appearances in Jackson County District Court on Tuesday.

Bond was increased from $500,000 to $1 million for Marielle Trey Smith, 24, of Lawton, who is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the Aug. 20 death of Jared Allen Holmes, 32, at an Altus residence. Bond remained at $250,000 for Smith's alleged accomplice, Ryan McKenzie Fields, 22, who is charged with accessory after the fact.

Preliminary hearings were scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 17 for Fields and 1:15 p.m. that same day for Smith. Both hearings will be held in the courtroom of District Judge Clark Huey.

The murder of Holmes took place Aug. 20 at a residence in the 400 block of North Julian where Holmes was shot and killed. Holmes' body was recovered two days later from a location just northwest of Frederick in Tillman County. Smith's vehicle, a 2007 Dodge Charger, and Holmes' vehicle, a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, were later recovered from locations in Lawton.
