Prayer walk slated for slain father, son

Organizers of the local Stop the Violence program announced plans for a prayer walk later this month in honor of two murder victims.

The next Stop the Violence Prayer walk will be Feb. 22 in the vicinity of Northwest 12th and Columbia. Those planning to attend will gather at 10:30 a.m. at either Harmon Park or Ron Stephens Stadium. Following a prayer session, the walk will begin at 11 a.m.

The area of the march includes the residence where Uwe Rushing, 50; and his son Stefan, 14, were shot and killed Jan. 20. Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the killings.

The tentative route of the walk will follow Northwest 14th Street from the starting point north to Northwest Dearborn Avenue, east on Dearborn to Northwest 13th Street, south on Northwest 13th to Columbia, east on Columbia to Northwest 12th Street, Northwest 12th to Northwest Bell Avenue and west on Bell back to Northwest 14th Street between the park and the stadium.

"We want to pray for the family of the victims," said Sam Moyd, pastor of Zoe Christian Center and leader of the Stop the Violence group. "We also want to make contact with the family and provide them with what support and assistance they may need."

Moyd said the event was moved to Feb. 22 from the usual first Saturday of the month due to possible conflicts with other activities during the upcoming weekend.
