Cox’s Store firefighters work over the smoldering remnants of a burning car that crashed into the fenceline along Northeast Trail Road, south of Mountain View Road, Thursday night. A passing driver stopped and broke the window and extricated — with his wife’s assistance — the 20-year-old man behind the wheel.

Man pulled from burning car

A 20-year-old man was hospitalized after a passing motorist pulled him from his burning car along Northeast Trail Road Thursday night.

"If he'd've been in there a little bit longer, he'd've been toast," said Valley View Fire Chief Ronnie Smith.

Valley View firefighters joined Cox's Store's volunteers to extinguish the fire as it spilled from the crumpled car and onto the parched prairie grass surrounding about a half-mile south of Mountain View Road. Responders were called to the scene after Bobby England reported the fire.

England, of Elgin, said he was riding home with his wife when he saw the burning car wedged into the barbed wire fenceline and called 911.
