Sooners could strike big blow for Big 12 with win

NEW ORLEANS  Monday's Sugar Bowl between Oklahoma and Auburn has a Big 12 vs. Southeastern Conference narrative hanging all over it.

But by beating Auburn, the Sooners could potentially give their home conference another assist.

An OU victory would secure Big 12's first above .500 showing in the postseason in a half-decade, making the conference a respectable 4-2 in bowls this season. That would mark the conference's best showing since 2011-12.

Samaje Perine is a man of few words, but the softspoken Oklahoma running back spared a few when asked about the opportunity following a practice last week.

"We hear a lot of things about the Big 12 not being physical," Perine said, "so with a great opponent like Auburn, we have an opportunity to get a win that would be big not only for us but for the whole conference in general.

"As a conference, we've done well so far, so to carry on that trend and go out and defeat a great opponent like them would be great for our program and the conference."
