RollerGirls fall in home opener
Lawton's 580 RollerGirls fell but fought hard in their 2017 home opener.
The team with a lot of new wheels on the track is showing signs of heading in the right direction.
The RollerGirls fell to the Mo-Kan Roller Girls, 223-125 on Saturday at the Great Plains Coliseum. For 580, now 0-2 for the season, it was their second loss to Mo-Kan. The RollerGirls opened up the 2016 with a 292-74 loss at Mo-Kan's rink in late March.
Things started strong for 580 as jammers Scarlett JoHatchet and Mo-Kan's Sarina Baltierra racked up a 10-point jam. The visitors kept the momentum going while the blockers held the home team back and with 10 minutes left in the first half, 580 trailed 94-34. 580 stepped things up and blockers held Mo-Kan to no points for seven straight jams while racking up 42 points and closing the half trailing, 102-76.
"Sometimes you just need a time out to refocus," said Coach Ellen Lechel, a.k.a. Elle Beau Macaroni. "We talked about why our walls were breaking down, and then we played our game. It wasn't really until the 15th jam that we figured out how to get lead jammer and started racking up points."
