Cocannouer says he's not ready to retire yet
Dan Cocannouer jumped off the coaching carousel last fall when he resigned as football mentor at Southwestern State.
Or did he?
Four months after hanging up his whistle, Cocannouer is pondering a return to education. It seems a 39-year habit is hard to kick.
"I don't know what I'm going to do," the former Walters High School coach said. "I'm gonna start looking for another place or another job in probably the next month."
He spent the last two weekends working as clock operator during State Basketball Tournament games at The Big House in Oklahoma City's State Fair Park.
"About a week after I decided I was going to retire, I get a letter from Teacher Retirement that said I need to spend a little more time in public education, K through 12, and it's worth a bunch more money in my retirement," Cocannouer said.
"And my daughters go: 'dad, that a no-brainer'.
"And I said: 'no-brainer for you. Heck, I thought I was done'."
Daughters are Janie (Mrs. Cory Pence) of Dallas and Josie (Mrs. Colton Blackburn) of Edmond.
