Cameron homer barrage dooms ENMU
PORTALES, N.M. - Paige Daino and Breezy McComas jumped into the Cameron softball record books Saturday by hitting home runs in the critical fifth inning to spark the Aggies to a 5-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico and to a 3-0 sweep of the Zias.
The sweep should give the Aggies a good deal of momentum and it couldn't come at a better time with powerful West Texas A&M scheduled to visit Lawton Thursday and Friday in a shootout for a lofty spot in the Lone Star Conference standings.
Angelo State, the nation's No. 2-ranked team, leads the league at 18-3 while Cameron and WT are tied for second at 16-4. Cameron is now 28-13 overall while WT is 31-6. The series not only will be in the Lone Star spotlight but the South Central Regional spotlight as the team that comes out ahead in this series could really go a long way toward icing their berth in the regional tournament since Texas Woman's University is a distant fourth at 12-8.
Saturday's game was basically decided in a few minutes in the top of the fifth inning. After watching freshman Callie Busby drilled a three-run homer to deep center, Daino followed with a homer to left and then McComas stepped up and hit another shot to deep center. While they were big in just getting the team win, they also pushed the two Aggie veterans into a tie for the career home run record.
Both have now hit 43 home runs and have tied Sonora Zukerman for the honor. And with at least nine more games, there is a good chance one, or both, will break the record by the time the playoffs arrive.
