Native American students fare well at language fair

Several local children earned honors during the recent 14th annual Oklahoma Native American Youth Language Fair.

The competition, held April 4 and 5 at the Sam Noble Museum, drew 1,186 participants from across Oklahoma and other states in grades pre-kindergarten through twelfth. Students competed in 11 different categories, including spoken language, traditional song with language, modern song with language, spoken poetry, spoken prayer, written poetry, cartoon, poster art, book, language advocacy essay and multimedia categories.

Locals receiving honors:

• Summer Bunch, honorable mention in the sixth- through eighth-grade Poster Art category.

• Comanche Nation Youth Program  second place in the ninth- through 12th-grade Large Group Traditional Song category and first place in the ninth- through twelfth-grade Group Spoken Prayer category.
