Local orchestras set performance
The LaSill Optimist Youth Orchestra will hold its final concert of the season at 7 p.m. Monday in the Central Middle School Auditorium,1201 Fort Sill Blvd.
The Youth Orchestra is a full orchestra composed of high school students from Lawton, Cache and Elgin; Sinfonia is a string orchestra made up of area middle school students. Both groups are sponsored and supported by the LaSill Optimist Club.
Conductor Kathy Liticker will lead the Youth Orchestra in performances of "Sleeper's Wake," "Danse Infernale" and "An Night on Bald Mountain."
Cheryl McLaughlin-Stansberry will conduct Sinfonia in the performance of "Heroic Adventures," "Swallow Tail," "Aeolius" and "Ancient Hunters."
According to Music Adviser Susan Diekman, the two orchestras represent the only local opportunities for wind, percussion and string music students to gain experience in a full orchestra.
"I think the audience is in for a surprise at the quality of this concert. The groups have a very mature sound. It is exciting for the students to perform for a large audience. If you have a child who is interested in learning to play an instrument, this is a wonderful opportunity for an introduction to the various instruments performed by young students," Diekman said.
Diekman said that, when selecting music for the groups, she and others try to choose music from a variety of historical periods while also looking for pieces that will challenge the students technically.
For this season ending concert, the orchestras will play pieces from classical ballets, famous films and Oklahoma composers.
